When the Internet was still on dial-up (low speed connection), it was almost impossible to conduct video chats over the Internet. Voice and video were often lost during the transmission, and to make things worse, dial-up connections tend to drop frequently. However, all that has now changed since today’s Internet is a whole new beast.

First of all, understanding that premium or high quality content can only be transmitted via high speed connections, developers worked hard to improve the infrastructure. Today, in almost every major city in the world, you can expect high speed (broadband) Internet connections. They can be found in homes, hotels, restaurants, etc. You can even connect to a high speed connection wirelessly in many locations. This is great if you have a mobile device, such as a laptop or UMPC.

With the introduction of high-speed Internet, hardware and software developers are now able to release greatly enhanced technology to the public. Video chat is one such example.

As mentioned earlier, it was very difficult to conduct a decent online video chat in the past. However, with a broadband Internet connection, advanced hardware, and software, one can expect video chats to proceed smoothly without glitches.

Logitech recently released a new webcam, the QuickCam Pro 9000 HD webcam. This is a 2.0 megapixel webcam (the most advanced to date), and it offers support for HD (hi-def). For enthusiasts who love to record videos in HD format, this is the perfect webcam.

If you walk into a retail store, the QuickCam Pro will surely catch your attention. That’s because it has a very unique design. The small gadget has its lense situated to the left. In the middle, there is a button for taking pictures. Right below the button, there is the Logitech logo. Surrounding the logo and button, there is a circle that lights-up in red when the device is powered on.

The body of the webcam comes in two parts, which are joined by two hinges. This is to ensure that it is versatile enough to be placed on a wide variety of CRT and LCD monitors. If you like, you can also remove the gadget and place it on the table thanks to the unique product design.

The QuickCam Pro is powerful, supports HD, and easy enough to operate. The end user can use it to record personal videos or take photos with it, and then share them over the Internet with family and friends. They can also use the webcam to conduct full screen video chats with whoever they want. This is only possible with a high speed connection and a powerful webcam.

The gadget is reasonably priced at about $113. Although it costs a little more than ordinary webcams, it does sound like a fair price to pay for the advanced features and the quality of the product.

Garmin nüvi 260W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

Garmin nüvi 260W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
Binding: Electronics
Manufacturer: Garmin
Amazon.com Product Description:
Garmin's nüvi 260W combines the thinprofile and attractive price point of other nüvi 200-series GPS with directions in real street names and a wide screen that lets you see more of what's around you as you drive. Garmin's line on the device is that, "the nüvi 260W gives consumers the most sought-after navigation features, while eliminating many of the premium add-ons. The result is a PND that simply gets you from point A to point B – reliably, efficiently, and with style." As with all nüvis, you get Garmin reliability, the fast satellite lock of a high-sensitivity integrated receiver, a slim, pocket-sized navigator with a gorgeous display, detailed NAVTEQ maps that lets  you search by name for more than 6 million points of interest like stores, restaurants or hospitals, and an easy, intuitive interface.

Wider screen lets you see more of what's around.
Compare these actual size views:

4.3-inch screen

4.3-inch (diagonal) widescreen

The nüvi 260W comes preloaded with maps for U.S., Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, and features an  ultra-slim design.
Text-To-Speech
The text-to-speech feature of the nüvi 260W means that device automatically calls out street names (saying "turn right on Main Street" instead of "turn right in 200 feet."). This feature lets drivers keep their eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and tricky roadways.

See More of What's Around
The 4.3-inch backlit widescreen touchscreen on the nüvi 260W gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

Smart, Powerful Design
The nüvi 260W is built with a high-sensitivity GPS receiver for extreme accuracy, as well as an SD card slot for storing your media and additional navigation tools, and a USB interface for loading data. The nüvi display is touchscreen-enabled, making it a cinch to control the device with your fingertips. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to five hours of battery life depending on use.

Garmin Lock
Garmin's patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location

quit working within two weeks
I bought the Garmin in order to take it with me to Fl. I used it about 1 1/2 weeks and it quit working. It stopped working on my way to Kentucky where I am picking up my daughter-in-law to go to Arkansas for a military funeral. My son is in Afghanistan and his unit was hit and his best friend and team mate was killed. I now am going back to using mapquest, for don't have return information and it could not be here by tomorrow to help me anyway. I tried going into returns but it would not let me so now will see if this will go through. I will be home sometime next week and plan on returning this item at that time. I love amazon so hope this experience will not be a bad one.

Good Product, Great Customer Service
The Garmin GPS is fine. It still takes to long to lock on the satellites. However, it is much better than the Garmin 205 I had before. It has some nicer features like: turns coming up, spoken directions and maps in one screen. Mostly I am impressed with customer service. It was shipped USPS. The mail person left the box, my mail and inserts on the front steps. We got home after dark and had no idea the box was there. Needless to say the dogs got it (along with the mail). Our Golden Retrievers promptly destroyed the mail, the GPS and everything in it. After checking credit card insurance and such I called Amazon. I was ready to explain my case. After the rep laughed (he apologized) he asked me to hold. About 2 min. later he came back on the line and told me he has a new one on the way. My arguments for replacement were not necessary. I am very impressed. Overall a good GPS, and great customer service. A loyal customer, thanks Amazon.

Garmin Quality
Purchased this to replace a previous Garmin that had outdated maps.

Was a bit surprised with this one that the map updates took 3 hours to download via the Garmin website on DSL. Had I known, I would have done it at my office where we have truly high speed internet.

Downloading seems to have been achieved without a glitch though.

I love the wider screen. My older one was the smaller screen.

Very pleased with this item.

Easy to use !
I was able to use my new Garmin right out of the box. Size is great & it's not obnoxious like some GPS are. Good value for the money!

Generally on target, but...
I've had the Magellan 2200T for a couple of years, and generally liked it, but found it was taking longer and longer to acquire a signal. It got to the point that I'd find my destination on my own before the signal synced up, so it was time for a new one. I decided to try the Garmin Nuvi. For slightly over 0, I thought it was a pretty good deal.

Overall it's a nice unit, and seems to do the job. The only thing I'm questioning is some of it's routing algorithms, which don't seem as efficient as the Magellan. I've tried some routes I know well just to see what it would do, and it takes some strange (unncessary) twists and turns -- probably not out of the way, but I wonder sometimes why it goes one route vs. another that seems easier to me. For example, on one route it took me down a state hiway that paralelled an interstate that probably was faster... But maybe it took me .2 miles out of the way to get to the interstate. That left me scratching my head.

But in most other ways, it is certainly comparable if not slightly better. I bought the Garmin Portable Friction Mount which is a neat way to display. I never had a mount for my Magellan and it is really nice to be able to glance at the Garmin, see speed, and the road ahead. The Garmin does have a much improved map with readable text for street names, etc.

Overall, for the price, it's a good solution.

Flip Ulta Series Camcorder
Pretty easy to use. Don't turn the camera sideways to film. Pain to download to save to computer...The size makes it very easy for traveling. It does an hour worth of taping. Surprised how well it works in low lighting. Sound is pretty good also. Great cheap camcorder for just around the house and party type events.

THIS THING NEVER WORKED
Flip sent me 3 camcorders, none would record when I pressed the red record button. Amazon ( a great company) finally had to return my money. Flip refused to send me a refund. Thanks to Amazon I got my money back. I would not use a flip if they gave me one.

Fun for travel
I took this with me on a trip to Europe last year and it worked great! The picture quality and sound are pretty good, but I wish it had been a tad smaller. (Note - there is a smaller version Flip Mino Camcorder, 60 Minutes (Black), but the Ultra was recommended to me as having better quality.)

Solid product, but build quality could be much better
Video Quality: Obviously, a big factor that people worry about is video quality. The video quality of this camera is pretty nice, especially for the price that I paid. However, it is a bit washed out (especially indoors). 36/40

Audio Quality: The mic on this is also pretty nice, but it is a bit muffled. The mic on this is also pretty prone to wind noise. All else considered, the audio is still fairly crisp and clear. 17/20

Memory: While memory consumption is extremely efficient on this camera, better than you would find on most digital cameras that shoot in standard definition, the memory is completely non-expandable. The memory expandability is a pretty big factor when you only have a fairly limited amount of memory to work with. 14/20

Durability: Upon first impression, this camera does NOT feel very well built. Not to mention that it broke after a fall from chest height. 6/20

Features: This camera has what you need, but the zoom sucks (2x optical) and the features are very basic (no macro). 5/10

Portability: This camera is reasonably portable, it will fit in most pockets, but it is slightly bigger than your average digital camera. 8.5/10

Battery: The battery life on this is pretty nice, you will rarely have to change batteries, but the fact that this uses AA batteries is a slight negative point; however, on field replacement can be seen as an advantage. 9/10

Aesthetics: It's not an eyesore to look at, but its Fisher Price-like look isn't necessarily attractive. 2.5/10

Overall: 73% (3.5/5)

Summary: Overall, this is a good product for freelance videographers. However, I would not recommend it for anybody else or if you need a camera that can take abuse. If you need a product like this but with better build quality, I would suggest the similarly priced Kodak Zi6, which shoots in 720p HD.

FLIP VIDEO DOES NOT LAST LONG
At first I loved my FLIP upon receiving it as a Christmas gift in 2008 - not even one year ago. Went to use it recently and the camera is FROZEN - this must happen often because it is on the Q and A of frequently asked questions. I email the support staff at FLIP and they instructed me to remove all batteries from camera for 48 - 72 to see if Camera would automatically reset. Batteries have been out for a little over 72 hours, camera still frozen. FLIP support told me that because it is over 90 days ther is nothing they can do. This viedo camera, although small and portable, is nothing more than a disposable video camera that won't last long. I personally feel whenyou buy something like this the expectation is that it will last a few years at least. Would not recommend.
